Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal Dialysis – A Home-Based Alternative to Hemodialysis

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a kidney failure treatment that uses the lining of your abdomen (peritoneum) to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. It offers patients more flexibility compared to hemodialysis and can be done at home or while traveling.

🧬 Why It's Used:
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients seeking home-based care
  • Patients who want to avoid frequent hospital visits
  • Those with residual kidney function
🩻 How It Works:
  • A catheter is inserted into the abdomen
  • A cleansing fluid (dialysate) flows into the abdominal cavity
  • Waste products pass from blood into the fluid via the peritoneal membrane
  • Used fluid is drained and replaced regularly
  • Can be done manually (CAPD) or with a machine (APD)
⚠️ Possible Complications:
  • Peritonitis (infection of the abdominal lining)
  • Hernias due to pressure
  • Weight gain or bloating
  • Catheter-related issues

Peritoneal dialysis empowers patients to manage treatment on their schedule. It may not be suitable for everyone, so consult with your nephrologist to determine the best dialysis method for your lifestyle and health needs.
